Ryanair was founded in 1985 by the Ryan family. The initial 25 employees operated the daily (and only) route Waterford (WAT) - London Gatwick (LGW) until May 1986 when the second route Dublin (DUB) - London Gatwick (LGW) was introduced. Ryanair was Europe's the first low-cost carrier and is still the largest today. Over the years more and more routes to destinations in Europe were added. In 2005 the number of routes reached 300. About 35 million people flew with Ryanair that year.
